How are Civil Rights and Disability Rights connected?

These two movements have moved together. When we look at Civil Rights in terms of Black liberation to go back as far as, well, this country, let’s start with enslavement. So many of the enslaved freedom fighters had physical and mental disabilities due to the effects of slavery. So for instance, a very well-known figure, Harriet Tubman, she had head injuries, she had instances where she had learning disabilities and sometimes she had seizures and she was unable to go from doing day-to-day things. She was still able to lead, she was still able to bring about freedom. So those two movements are each other. They work so closely and there’s not one without the other.
