For many families, creating a college plan for a child with disabilities is a challenging process. Finding the right school that addresses your child’s specific needs requires a great deal of research. The added layer of costs for higher education makes for a more stressful experience. However, these 6 college scholarships can help bring financial relief for students with learning disabilities in or applying to college.

1. The BMO Capital Markets Lime Connect Equity Through Education Scholarship for Students with Disabilities

  • undergraduate and graduate students with learning or physical disabilities

  • applicants must attend a four-year university in the US or Canada

  • applicants must pursue degrees in math, physics, business or commerce, statistics, engineering, or a related field

  • applicants must be interested in pursuing a career in financial services

  • applicants must submit a letter of recommendation, transcripts, and an essay specifying their career goals and why they should be selected

  • US recipients: $10,000 Canadian recipients: $5,000

  • applications open fall 2017

2. Marian Huber Learning Through Listening Awards

  • applicants must be high school seniors with disabilities

  • applicants must be a member of Learning Ally, a nonprofit that helps students with disabilities including visual impairment, dyslexia, and blindness

  • three awards for $6,000

  • three awards for $2,000

  • applicants must plan to attend a 2-year or 4-year school or vocational school

  • application deadline is May 31, 2017

3. Gemm Learning Dyslexia Scholarship

  • $1,000 scholarship, offered twice a year

  • applicants must plan to enroll or currently attend college in the US or Canada

  • applicants must submit a 500- to 650-word essay about living with dyslexia

  • the winning essay will be featured in their blog

  • the winner must respond email within three days of being notified

  • application period for Fall 2017 is April 1 – July 15

4. Law Offices of Judd S. Nemiro PLLC annual scholarships

  • 2 annual scholarships of $1,000

  • applicants must be students with dyslexia

  • applicants must complete online application

  • visit their website for updates regarding this year’s application

5. Avonte Oquendo Memorial Scholarship for Autism

  • awarded by The Perecman Firm PLLC of New York, a personal injury law firm

  • $1,000 scholarship

  • applicants must be undergraduate or postgraduate students

  • applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college or university

  • applicants must either been diagnosed with or have a close family member who has been diagnosed with autism (including Asperger’s syndrome)

  • applicants must fill out the application and submit a 500 to 1,000-word essay on one of three autism-related topics

  • deadline for fall 2017 applications is July 31

6. Feldman & Royle, Attorneys at Law Annual Scholarships

  • two $1,000 scholarships

  • applicants must be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • applicants must submit an essay detailing how their disorder has affected their education as well as a 100-word statement regarding their education goals

  • check the firm’s website for updates on the 2017 application deadline
