Helping Your Teen Start to Tell Their Story
Leslie Grover, Ph.D. President-Founder, Assisi House
[Leslie] The quick question is, how can we help our teen get started with their story? This is an important question because everybody’s story should be told. And everybody does have a story to tell, regardless of their age, experience, or walks in life.
So for a teen to get started to telling their story, there are basically two ways. One is if you are a caretaker or parent of a teen, and you have the opportunity to drive with that teen, take a drive. Because you paying attention to the road and driving can make the team more comfortable in sharing their story with you.
Similarly, another way to do that is to just make it a safe space for your teen to tell their story. And you can start by either creating some ground rules before you have a talk. Or you can use the opportunity to simply just tell the teen, hey I’d really like the opportunity to hear what’s going on. And you can start with really short, simple conversations about things that you know that they really like to do.
Thank you!
