If your child has been evaluated or gotten a diagnosis from their doctor, you might be wondering, “Why does my child need a special education evaluation?” A school evaluation helps the school understand how your child’s needs affect their learning in the classroom and ensures they receive the support they need to succeed.

Creating an IEP tailored to your child’s needs can make learning easier and guarantee they receive the services they need to thrive in school.

Transcript:

You may be wondering why your child needs a school evaluation if they’ve already been evaluated by their doctor. But, having a school evaluation serves a different purpose.

School evaluations focus on how your child’s needs affect their day to day learning and activities in the classroom. The goal is to see if they need extra support to help them access the curriculum and make progress.

If they do need the extra support, you and the team will create an IEP that outlines the accommodations your child needs at school to help them succeed and ensure that they receive the right services An IEP may provide your child with extra help in reading, speech therapy, or teaching methods, or other changes that make learning easier and more effective for them. This encourages teamwork between you, your child’s teachers, and school specialists.

Together, you can create a plan that supports your child’s learning and overall development. Plus, some helpful school programs and services are only available if a school evaluation shows your child needs them.

Every child deserves to learn in a way that works best for them.
