Every Child Counts, Every Moment Matters

Welcome to Students with Exceptionalities (SWE)

St. Tammany Parish Public Schools knows that you care about your child!  Every child is unique, and their differences are wonderful.

As parents, guardians, and caregivers, we know you are the experts in your child. We want to learn from you and collaborate with you to understand your child’s strengths, challenges, and needs.

Here in St. Tammany, we use the term SWE: Students with Exceptionalities. We feel it’s a more positive way to address students who need special education services. The SWE department also serves students in the Gifted and Talented Programs.

About The SWE Family Collaboration Project

We are excited to announce a partnership in collaboration with Exceptional Lives!

This pilot project has been a great opportunity for our SWE staff to build strong relationships and clear communication with STPPS families.

The goal of the project is to foster a more collaborative and supportive environment that will improve the educational experience of our students and their families. Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, we’ve had trainings for our special education staff, workshops for families, and have been making our communications easier to understand.

Exceptional Lives is a leading non-profit organization dedicated to supporting families of children with disabilities and the educators who work with them. On its website, you will find a large selection of free resources to help you navigate the SWE process. You’ll also find supports for your family, like government benefits, health insurance, and a directory of service providers throughout the state.

We will continue to work closely with Exceptional Lives, share their resources, and create new ones that meet your needs.
